Cornelius "Connie" Michael Campbell,90, of Philadelphia passed away on July 8th 2022. He is survived by his sister-in-law Margo Campbell, his nieces Anne Marie (Nee Campbell) Davidson, Robin (Nee Campbell) Twombly, Susan (Nee Campbell) Niven, and Alexis Campbell, his nephew James Campbell, and his seven grand nieces and nephews. Connie was a devoted son, loving brother and brother-in-law, and dedicated uncle and great uncle, and wonderful friend to many. Connie was a devout Catholic and an accomplished lifelong golfer.
Connie graduated from North Catholic High School in 1950, and served faithfully in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict from in the private sector, Connie worked in sales for many years, but spent the last twenty years of his career working for the United States Government at the Defense Supply Center in Philadelphia. As a lifelong bachelor, Connie's great love was golf. He was a highly decorated amatuer golfer. He became a member of Torresdale-Frankford Country Club (now Union League Golf Course at Torresdale) on April 10, 1959, where he won seven Club Championships during a blistering ten year stretch, which started with an improbable win at the 1959 Philadelphia Amateur Championship, which unbelievably was his first time entering a solo golf tournament. While equally impressive, that same year he won the Golf Association of Philadelphia's Tournament of Champions, where he defeated 31 Club Champions from the area. If asked, Connie would tell you his proudest golf achievements were his Tournament Of Champions win in 1959 and his course record-setting round of 61 at Langhorne Country Club in 1957. The 9-under round included eight birdies, two eagles, and unbelievably a bogey and double bogey.
Connie adored his mother, living with her and taking such wonderful care of her until her death in 1998. Up until fairly recently, he selflessly served as a driver to family and friends who needed help with groceries and medical appointments. Upon the sudden death of his younger brother Bob in 1995, Connie took it upon himself to be a father figure for Bob's children and a trusted friend and support for Bob's widow Margo.
Connie will be remembered for his devout faith, his deep love of family, his selfless generosity of spirit and sense of service, his wonderful dry wit, his no-nonsense manner, his simple lifestyle, his modesty, and his longstanding love affair with beer and the great game of golf.
