JOHN T. SWEENEY

APRIL 2, 1937 - APRIL 19, 2022

John T. Sweeney Sr. passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on April 19, 2022, at the age of 85. John was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 2, 1937 to the late Jesse and Catherine (née Hauer) Sweeney. He attended St. Bart's Grade School and graduated from North Catholic High School in 1955.  Following high school, John proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.  He married his lifelong sweetheart and partner, Irma, on May 23, 1959.

An athlete throughout his lifetime, John enjoyed playing tennis, racquetball, and bike-riding. He coached baseball at Roosevelt Playground for many years, beginning with the Pee-Wee League for the Seneca.  He was also a die-hard Phillies fan.

A medical implant salesman for the majority of his career, John also started his own company, Sweeney and Associates, in 1980.  John always had an affinity for the seashore, and after years of family trips to Wildwood, NJ, he and Irma purchased a home and moved full-time to Ocean City, NJ in 1993.  Retired in 2002, John lived the rest of his life cherishing time with his family, walking the boardwalk and enjoying the bay breezes on his back-deck.

John was blessed with a large, loving family.  Predeceased by his beloved wife Irma (née Haggenbottom), he is survived by his five children: Jack (Sheryl) Sweeney, Kathleen (Drew) Siddons, Karen (Jeff) Meenan, Brian (Karen) Sweeney, and Patricia (Joseph) Roach.  He is the loving grandfather of: JT (Emily), Jessica, Erin, Sean, Heather, Jeffrey (Matt), Joey, Brian, Brandon, Matthew, Kevin, and John; great grandfather of Jenna and Ryan.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Sunday evening April 24, 2022 at THE EDWARD J PETNER FUNERAL (family owned and operated) 6:00pm to 8pm and again on Monday morning April 25 from 8:30am to 10:00am.
