Obituary

LORRAINE CUMMISKEY

AUGUST 2, 1945 - MAY 4, 2025

Lorraine Cummiskey (née Horner), 79, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away on May 4, 2025, in her home of 60-years, surrounded by her family.

Born on August 2, 1945, Lorraine was the daughter of William Horner and Helen Horner (née Buck). She was born and raised in Port Richmond as the middle child between her sisters Helen Weiseman (née Horner) and Patricia Daily (née Horner). Though all have predeceased her, they remained a deeply cherished part of her life and memory.

Lorraine attended St. Anne's Catholic school, followed by Commercial School pursuing stenography, a skill that led her to an early career at the Naval Yard in Philadelphia. She was sharp, extremely detailed, independent and very proud of her education and skills.

It was during these early years that she caught the eye of Donald Cummiskey. A striking blonde with a strong will, Lorraine married Donald at the age of 20, beginning a marriage that would span 57 years until his passing. Together they raised five children: Donald, Michael, Karen, Bill, and Jennifer.

As a mother and homemaker, Lorraine was known for her unwavering discipline. She believed in respect above all else and her children learned early that there was no room for excuses. Her home was filled with traditions and celebrations.  She was a fixture at sporting events.  This love and support of her children then extended to her grandchildren where she was always front row at games, dances and recitals.   Christmas is where Lorraine thrived with her generous and thoughtful gifts.

Lorraine had a deep love for politics and current events. Though she never traveled far from home, she possessed impressive knowledge of geography and history. She was a great debater, a stubborn Irish woman, talked a lot and always was the last to leave any event. She taught those around her to stand up for themselves and never back down.  She had a simple presence that has shaped her family and generations to come.

Joy was found in the little things like watching "Survivor", casting votes on "American Idol" and playing her computer games on Facebook.  Lorraine loved creating photo albums and was tech savvy.  She loved to dance and listening to the oldies and singing to the Bee Gee's and Neil Diamond.

Lorraine's toughness was matched by her loyalty and unwavering commitment to her family.  Lorraine had a strong exterior especially during her cancer journey, though had a visible soft side and a huge heart.

Lorraine is survived by her children Donald Cummiskey (Maryann), Michael Cummiskey (Cristina), Karen Shilling (Ray), Bill Cummiskey (Dawn), and Jennifer Dove (Phil).  Lorraine was the Gmom to grandchildren Billy Cummiskey (Colleen), Julia Cummiskey, Matthew Cummiskey, Cailey Gibson, Kaitlin Cummiskey, Gavin Gibson, Liam Cummiskey, Samantha Shilling, Jacob Cummiskey and Chase Cummiskey.  She welcomed step-grandchildren into her family as if they were her own, Andrew, Alexa, Logan, Dean, Olivia and Trinity.   Her most cherished, was her being GGmom to great granddaughter Riley.  Lorraine was also survived by countless family members and loyal friends.

May Lorraine's memory bring comfort to all who knew her.  She leaves behind a legacy of strength, resiliency, laughter, conviction and love that will endure through reliving stories and while flipping through one of her beloved photo albums.
