MARGARET M. HAUPTMANN
FEBRUARY 28,1926 - NOVEMBER 8,2021
Margaret Hauptmann (Conway), beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and great-grandmother, passed away on Monday, November 8 th , 2021. She was 95.
Known as Marge to her friends and Mom-Mom Marge to her family, Margaret Conway was born on February 28 th , 1926 in Sugarnotch, Pennsylvania, a town with only 3,000 residents. When she was 15, her and her family moved to Philadelphia and she found herself in a bustling city and at a new high school with as many students as there were residents in her hometown. When she was registering for her high school, she met a few young women who would become lifelong friends.
Not too long after her 16 th birthday, while sharing a ride to the Poconos, she met a man named Hans Hauptmann, 9 years her senior. Through pure serendipity, they happened to catch the same bus one week later and chatted the whole ride. They were married three years later. In 1952, they had a daughter named Joanie and four years later, their second daughter Gail was born.
Marge was one of the only women in her neighborhood who worked a full-time office job and drove a car. She loved to host friends and family at her house, cooking her incredible mashed potatoes, brewing her famous iced tea, telling corny jokes and dancing the night away. Even after she retired and her children moved away, her social life flourished and she spent many of her days at the casino with her girlfriends or cleaning the church. Saint Timothy's Parish was like a second home to her and she lived in Mayfair for nearly 70 years, remaining in the same rowhome well after her husband passed away.
The daughter of a machinist and the wife of a watch repairman, Marge was never wealthy but was always rich in joy. She surrounded herself with friends and always had a bright outlook on life. She lived through World War II, The Great Depression, The Korean War, 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic and still survived to hold her great granddaughter in her arms.
In the end, she wanted to pass on in the home that she raised her children in, the place where she hosted countless holidays and gatherings, the home her grandchildren played in and where her husband took his last breath. She got her wish and passed away safe in her bed surrounded by family.
She died just like she lived, on her own terms.
Marge is survived by her daughters Gail and Joanie, her sons-in-law Michael and Stephen, beloved grandchildren Michael (Laura), Jeanine (Andrew), Stephen (Brittany) and Samantha (David), great granddaughter Loa, nephew Raymond (Patricia), and many friends who she also considered family.
