Obituary

Maria C. Verbas

Maria C. Verbas (nee Rubinich) a resident of Northeast Philadelphia for 57 years, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2017, at Briarleaf Nursing Center in Doylestown, PA. She was 93.

Born on January 25, 1924 in Cherso, Italy, Maria was the second of three daughters born to the late Ana and Francesco Rubinich. After World War II, she spent time in an Italian refugee camp hoping to be reunited with the love of her life. Finally, in 1960, Maria immigrated to Philadelphia and married her beloved husband, the late John. G. Verbas, on December 30, 1961. Maria and John are now reunited once again.

Her greatest achievement was raising her son, John, to be a kind, dedicated and hard-working man after losing her husband in 1978. With the help of her mother and sisters, Maria successfully dedicated herself to being the best parent possible. She was also a talented seamstress and an amazing cook with a strong devotion to her Catholic faith.

Maria was the loving mother of John F. Verbas (Bernadette) of Warminster, PA, and dearly loved Nonna to her cherished granddaughters, Amber N. Verbas (Ian Gundry) of Philadelphia, Shepard M. Verbas (Karina) of Port Chester, NY, and Erica B. Verbas of Philadelphia. She will be greatly missed for her caring nature, her infectious laugh, her delicious meals, and her love of God and family above all else.

In addition to her son and granddaughters, Maria is survived by her sister, Anita Tentor, of Newtown, PA; nieces Evelina McGuigan (Tom) of Feasterville, PA and Eleonora McGraw (John) of Holland, PA; great-nephews Dominic, Gregory (Nell) and David McGraw and many close family and friends. Maria was preceded in death by her sister, Rosaria M. Rubinich in 2016.

Relatives and friends are invited to Maria's visitation from 9:30 AM until her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 3001 Levick St., Philadelphia, PA 19149. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Bensalem, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Timothy's Catholic Church.
