Mary E.
Stenn
Jan 7, 1924 — Dec 1, 2017
Mary Elizabeth (nee Chambers) Stenn formerly Devine
January 7, 1924- December 1, 2017
Mary was born in South Philadelphia to Mary and Charles Chambers in 1924. She grew up there with her older brother, Charlie. Her family moved to the St. Barnabas Parish in the southwest section of Philadelphia when she was starting school. She was a member of the first graduating class of John Bartram High School in 1942.
In 1942, she met the love of her life, Daniel Devine, while working for the Philadelphia Electric Company. Shortly after, he was drafted into the US Army. In 1944, they married during WWII and later settled in St. Timothy's Parish in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia. Here they raised their two children, Daniel Devine and Mary Louise Devine.
After 19 years of marriage, Mary's life changed as she devoted herself to lovingly caring for her husband, who passed away after a long illness. Mary returned to the workforce, at times working two jobs, to maintain the best life possible for her two young children. After several years, she met Hubert Stenn, who was a wonderful and loving companion, and she spent the next 10 years happily married to him.
Mary's greatest joy in life was her family, especially her 6 grandchildren, , Colleen(Scott) Agostini, Kathleen(Mark) Schmitt, Michael(Kristen) Hindley, Kelly Hindley and Daniel(Lisa) Hindley and the late Patrick Hindley. She was so very proud of them and had the utmost of love for them. She was also blessed with twelve great-grandchildren. She was truly the matriarch of the family, affectionately nicknamed, "Sarge". In addition to spending time with her family, she loved to travel with her friends, especially her closest friends, Irene and Martha. Much of her time spent with family and friends was at the shore in Wildwood Crest.
She touched so many people during her life in her own special way. She was loved dearly by many and will be forever missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her viewing Wednesday morning 8:30am to 10:00am at THE EDWARD J. PETNER FUNERAL HOME(family owned and operated)6421 Frankford Ave. Phila. Pa.19135.
