William B. Generao
August 27, 1929 – February 16, 2026
William B. Generao, lovingly known as Bill, Will, Willie, Dad, and Pop, passed peacefully into eternal rest on February 16, 2026, at the age of 96. A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with deep roots in Brooklyn, New York, William lived a full and meaningful life defined by service, devotion to family, and unwavering compassion for others.
Born in Philadelphia on August 27, 1929, William was the proud son of immigrant parents, May Kelly of Dublin, Ireland, and James B. Generao of Manila, Philippines. He carried forward their strength, work ethic, and deep love of family throughout his life.
William was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge, and later continued his service in the MerchantMarines, also honorably discharged. His commitment to hard work and responsibility extended into his long career as a Union Roofer with Local 30B in Philadelphia. William led crews on commercial and historically significant architectural projects throughout the city and was widelyrespected as an expert craftsman and natural leader. He worked faithfully every day in support of his family until his retirement at age 65.
For 58 devoted years, William shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Donna L. Generao (Karp). Together, they built a life centered on love, family, and shared joy. They cherished summers in Ocean City, New Jersey, surrounded by their children and grandchildren. William and Donna loved dancing together, visiting the casinos, and simply being in one another's company.
William was predeceased by two of his children, Joanne and William Generao, Jr. He is survived by his loving children: John, Frances, Theresa, Lisa, Kimberly, Patricia, and Tracey. He was the proud grandfather of 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on through each of them. Granddaughters Julia and Caitlin were especially close, taking good care of Pops and Nana.
William is predeceased by his siblings: John, May, Francis, Carmen, Patricia, Suzie, Esther, and Joyce. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews.
In his early years, William was a competitive boxer. He later dedicated over a decade of volunteer service training young athletes at the Police Athletic League in Philadelphia alongside his dear friend Joe "Butch" Jesus. Known respectfully as "Mr. Generao," he helped guide young boxers both inside and outside the ring, offering discipline, mentorship, patience, and compassion. His influence shaped lives and created lasting memories for countless young people who needed guidance most.
A gifted musician, William had a natural talent for any instrument he touched. He played guitar, piano, clarinet, and saxophone, and he sang beautifully. Music filled his home daily. One of his favorite traditions was singing after dinner, sharing songs and laughter with his children. These moments remain treasured family memories.
William valued friendship deeply. He nurtured lifelong relationships, often calling friends to check in, celebrate milestones, or share a laugh. A skilled chess player, he enjoyed spirited matches over the phone. Whether he won or lost, he always displayed gracious sportsmanship and a wonderful sense of humor. Many considered Will their closest friend. He was thoughtful, intelligent, and possessed a wisdom about life that brought comfort to many.
He found special joy in time spent with his nephews Jaime Lloyd and John Cantrol, and their families, who shared meaningful summers and heartfelt conversations with him. He cherished visits from his lifelong friend Joe "Butch" Jesus, reliving gym memories, sharing laughter, and enjoying simple pleasures like fresh Philadelphia pretzels. He was also deeply grateful for the kindness and care shown to him by his devoted nurse, Turquoise.
William believed each new day was a new beginning—and he lived by that philosophy. Though a fighter in the boxing ring, outside of it he was peaceful, kind, gentle, and loving. He invested time and love into each person who crossed his path. His compassion and strength will continue to guide those who knew him.
"Service to others is the rent we pay for our room here on Earth." – Muhammad Ali
William's work here is complete. A life well lived, a legacy well earned. He will be forever loved and remembered, and one day reunited with those who hold him dear.
In honor of William's lifelong dedication to mentoring young people, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia.
